Lard Ass Butter

We had a chat with Monica from Lard Ass Butter and asked her a few questions about her local butter products and what inspired her to start her journey.

How did Lard Ass come about?

I love butter so much I wanted to start a business making butter! That’s sort of true, but not entirely like that. Lard Ass Butter was born out of mild frustration and a serious love of good butter. I couldn’t understand why butter had become so bland when historically it was rich, cultured and full of flavour. So I started churning. Slowly. Properly. With fermented cream and zero shortcuts.

What began as a slightly obsessive kitchen experiment turned into a gold medal-winning cultured butter brand on the Bellarine. Turns out, if you love butter, you find others love it too.

What’s your go-to recommendation for visitors to Geelong and the Bellarine?

Start with a walk by the water — anywhere along the Bellarine coast will reset your nervous system.

Then spend the rest of the day eating and drinking your way through the region. Wineries, bakeries, farm gates, seafood — we’re spoiled here. Basically, come hungry and don’t rush. The Bellarine rewards people who slow down.

I also recommend a cool blue train that travels the Bellarine dining and wining its patrons… worth the trip!

How do you fill your cup in your spare time?

Cooking. Always cooking. There’s something deeply satisfying about feeding people properly — fresh bread, seasonal produce, good wine and (unsurprisingly) very good butter.

If I’m not in the kitchen, I’m near the water or walking my two pooches either coastal or bushland. It keeps the head clear and the ideas flowing.

What’s your favourite product from your range at the moment?
Honestly?  Our cultured salted butter.  It sounds simple, but when you naturally ferment cream there’s a beautiful depth to the butter and flavour after it has been churned slowly, the flavour is completely different — rich, slightly tangy, complex. Add the right amount of salt and it’s dangerously good.  It’s the one I always go back to. Bread, steak, vegetables, or whip up a batch of shortbread… it behaves itself everywhere.
How can our guests buy your products?

You’ll find Lard Ass Butter in selected independent grocers, specialty food stores, select farmer’s market in Melbourne, Geelong and regional Victoria, and other premium retailers across Victoria.

You can also visit our Butter Tasting Room located in Ocean Grove to try all the butters to your heart’s content.

The best way is to check our stockist list online and hunt it down. Good butter is worth the effort.
