From The Sunlander to The Q Train; A Heritage Carriage Story

When guests settle into their seats aboard The Q Train, they step into more than a memorable dining experience; they step into a piece of Australian railway history. Before arriving on the Bellarine Peninsula, our carriages spent 69 years travelling Queensland’s coastline as part of the iconic Sunlander.

A New Standard for Long Distance Travel

The Sunlander officially entered service on 4 June 1953, replacing the aging Sunshine Express. Its launch marked a turning point in Australian rail travel. For the first time in Queensland, passengers could enjoy a fully air conditioned, diesel hauled long distance sleeping-car train. This represented a major leap forward for comfort on the 1,600 kilometre journey from Brisbane to Cairns.

This new era was made possible thanks to Queensland Rail’s investment in M series carriages: modern stainless steel rolling stock featuring showers, roomettes, and a head end power car designed to keep passengers comfortable even during delays caused by floods and tropical weather.

These innovations reduced travel time from 45 to 41¼ hours which was a remarkable achievement in the 1950s.

Growth, Luxury & Changing Times

The Sunlander quickly became a favourite for holidaymakers and families, with services expanding to six per week by 1961. As the decades passed, Queensland Rail introduced even more improvements:

  • The luxury Queenslander Class offered premium accommodation and dining

  • A motorail service launched in 1992

  • Electric locomotives worked part of the route from 1989

Through floods, cyclones, infrastructure upgrades and changing passenger expectations, the Sunlander remained a constant on Queensland’s coastline.

By the time it made its final journey on 31 December 2014, the service had been reduced to a single weekly trip, replaced gradually by the modern Spirit of Queensland.

A Second Life on the Bellarine

When the M series carriages were retired, many faced an uncertain future. But several were given a new life far from their original home.

The Q Train acquired a collection of Sunlander carriages and undertook a meticulous, multi year restoration. Sleeping cars became dining cars, kitchens were expanded, and the carriages were reimagined to support a modern, exciting fine dining service.

Today, the same carriages that once carried travellers through Queensland’s sugarcane fields now traverse the scenic Bellarine, hosting guests onboard Australia’s premier rail dining journey.

Their story continues on different tracks, with a different purpose, but with the same spirit of hospitality and adventure that defined them more than 60 years ago.
